What is System Integration? How important is it?

System integration has become more and more widely used in various fields with the advancement of science and technology. It uses many related technologies mentioned in Industry 4.0. Let's learn what system integration is today!

    What is System Integration?

System integration in engineering refers to the process of integrating various components from a subsystem into a single system, and the process must ensure that the functions of all subsystems can operate normally in a single system, such as MRT, the airport of civil engineering.

Also, in Computer Science, it refers to the process of connecting different computer systems and software programs together so that these functions can be realized through a complete system, such as the integrated system of electronic toll collection, retail, manufacturing…etc.

According to the case of each system integration till now, although the difference and complexity are not the same, it is impossible to directly copy the development technology under different requirements, and also impossible to verify whether it is feasible in advance. Moreover, the fee for software and hardware, consulting, cross-functional communication, test adjustment, and education training makes the cost of controlling and customizing the system integration very high.

    Hardware system integration

The integration of the hardware system usually involves the design of the printed circuit board (PCB) by the hardware engineer, including the drawing and layout of the circuit. Then paste various integrated circuits and passive components with different functions on the circuit board, so that all the electronic components can work together to meet the requirements and create a product with complete functions.

Take the motherboard of a computer as an example, the central processing unit, the north bridge, the south bridge, and several other integrated circuits with different functions are installed on the printed circuit board and then packaged with a computer case.

    Software system integration

Software system integration is to integrate various software and firmware and install them into the designed hardware system for execution. For example, the operating system of a computer is installed on the central processing unit and then integrated into the peripheral required firmware such as hard disks, CD-ROMs, etc.

Application and Evolution of System Integration

The most common is the case of smart homes. Because of the appearance of this demand, the information electronics industry, networking communication industry, and home appliance industry have begun to integrate, such smart home appliances, remote monitoring, and security into the well-known entertainment, sensors with temperature control and power supplies, etc., although it doesn’t look like very complicated, the adjustment of electrical appliances and product specifications to cross-industry standards, as well as the operation of sales channels, all involve a wide range of cross-industry integration.

Not only smart homes, but the combination of automobiles, transportation, and information technology has also flourished in recent years.

The combination of related systems and equipment through the Internet of Things, sensing technology, network, and real-time computing technology is not as simple as purchasing software and hardware, getting equipment, writing programs, and providing education and training, but towards cross-domain integration which can let the system integration be completed accurately and correctly.

The system integration of enterprises and factories is very important which means integrating different systems, subsystems, software, or digital platforms into a central control platform. Although the series of procedures may be complicated, after integrating different businesses, considerable benefits will be achieved, the business can be executed more efficiently, and more complete data can be provided for more effective analysis.
